Primordium: the moment before everything

What if everything we take for reality is only a thin film upon the surface of a boundless ocean? Before reality there was neither time nor space. There was only a state of absolute potentiality — the Great Nothing, in which all things are contained. Not a void, but a field saturated with possibilities: unformed, undivided, unmanifest. This is Primordium: not an event, not a moment, but an eternal presence beyond cause and consequence.

In the Kabbalistic tradition this state is described as Ein Sof (the Infinite), in which there is as yet neither light nor darkness nor form. Before the first act of creation there was an infinite fullness, not an emptiness. The world as we perceive it arose not as the result of a material process, but as a manifestation of consciousness. Within the Great Nothing the First Thought was conceived, and it became the first boundary, the first act of separation. From that moment a distinction became possible: between inner and outer, light and darkness, stillness and motion.

Cosmology describes how intent became form; religion reminds us why form appeared at all. One traces the trajectory of matter, the other the direction of meaning. When both sound at once, it becomes clear: at the very beginning there was no «explosion» set against «creation». There was an unfolding. Space as a stage, time as rhythm, energy as breath, and behind it all — the One who sees.

There is another vantage point too: the language of the subject. A world in which the Intent of God comes first, the will of the Creator breathing being out of Nothing. This view is gathered from texts-as-memory (the Torah, the Bible, the Quran, and many others), where the beginning is understood as an act of creation, and the history of the Earth is read through symbols of remaking, all the way to the Flood. It matters that we hear the intonation of the forms of faith: each one says that behind any of them stands a Source, and behind any consequence — an intention.

Primordium is neither before nor after. It is before the category of «before». As in quantum theory, where a particle exists simultaneously in a countless multitude of states until it is fixed by an observer. A coin spins in the air — heads and tails at once, yet the moment we catch it and look, it instantly becomes one thing. So it is in the quantum world: a particle exists in all possible states, but the instant we «glance» at it (that is, measure it), it chooses one particular state. Reality is not predetermined; it manifests through the act of perception.

Strictly scientifically, the «observer» in quantum mechanics is a measuring device, not a consciousness, yet the boundary between the instrument and an aware being remains one of the open questions of physics. For us something else matters: the principle that stands behind it.

As entanglement experiments show, two particles remain linked and respond to each other instantly, regardless of distance. This reminds us that all that exists remains a single whole.

And this principle is not only about physics or metaphysics. It shows itself just as clearly in the most applied systems, where every decision carries a price, consequences, and inertia. In this sense business often becomes a vivid proving ground: here one sees plainly how the attempt to fix the future turns into an illusion of control, while the capacity to work with uncertainty becomes a source of resilience. So, for example, in the early 2000s Amazon stood at a point of uncertainty: the company was not yet a giant, and the market offered no clear forecasts. Bezos called the working principle of this period the Day 1 philosophy: the company kept itself in startup mode, never freezing its structure around a single scenario. This allowed Amazon to enter wholly different markets one after another, rather than along a drawn-up plan. Uncertainty became a working instrument.

We, living in linear time, reach toward a point of origin, yet forget: everything that has a beginning is already inside a coordinate system. Primordium lies beyond the system itself. It simply is not registered by a perception accustomed to form.

Imagine: you are in a state where there is not yet a single choice, not a single form. Only the space of the possible. This is full being before manifestation, a supersaturation with the possible; it is not a beginning, it is the never-falling always, out of which a moment is later born, a form is born, a «you» is born.

In the Sufi tradition there is the notion of Haqiqa — the primordial reality that precedes all names and forms. The Sufis say: «Before you said “I”, you already were.» Haqiqa is the level where the distinction between Creator and creation is not yet manifest. Everything is, yet nothing is yet separated.

Our familiar material world is only condensed thought. What comes first is conscious potentiality. Consciousness, vibration, observation — three steps that turn nothing into something. The higher the level of awareness, the finer the link between a thought and its embodiment. The question «what was there before?» already speaks in the language of limits.

Modern cosmology describes the early Universe as a state in which the familiar categories of time and space did not yet exist. There was no «earlier» and «later» — these very notions appeared together with the expansion of the Universe. The Big Bang was not a clap in a void. It was the moment when space itself began to unfold from an incredibly hot and dense state toward a world of stars and galaxies. We see the traces of this process: the receding of the galaxies, the relic radiation, the chemical «imprint».

But what matters most is not the physics, but what it reflects — a deeper truth: everything that exists is born of tension. Out of the concentration of potential in a point and the subsequent unfolding of that potential into form. Thus the Universe manifested out of the timeless Primordium, and thus a human being steps out of silence into awareness.

If we picture reality as a system, a question arises: who switched it on? No system exists without an initial impulse, yet the impulse is not a mechanism, it is will. Thought. Awareness. This means that what comes first is not the object but the subject — a mind capable of observing.

When I was closing one of my business directions in order to focus on what felt truly important, three options stood before me: to remain in the familiar model and keep scaling what already worked, to rebuild the project for a new market, or to begin from scratch what was ripening within. Each option looked logical, each had its arguments, each found supporters among people I respected. Yet only one of them resonated not in the head but deeper — in the body, in the sense of direction. I chose the third. The emptiness left by the former project turned out to be a space where it finally became possible to hear my own intent — the kind that is not born of strategy but emerges out of silence.

Every moment is a touch upon Primordium. Every «I realized» of yours is a stepping-out into the place where it all began. Every thought is a reflection of the First Thought.

Many teachings have described this point. In Christianity: «In the beginning was the Word»; in Vedic philosophy: Spanda — the vibration of consciousness; in Taoism: the Tao, from which all is born; in Buddhism: emptiness (Shunyata), which returns us to the true «I». Different cultures found their own words for one and the same thing — the moment where form is not yet chosen, yet is already possible. Deep attention meets one and the same silence, whatever the tradition.

They all speak of one thing: the object is not what comes first. What comes first is the vibration of awareness, and it lives within you. It sounds each time you choose awareness over automatism, action over reaction, creation over consumption; it is active when you stop repeating and begin to listen into yourself more deeply than logic allows.

Everything begins not with an event, but with the decision to be. The point of creation is not a place and not a moment. It is the inner tension of pure presence, in which the first intention is conceived. There is only the stillness of a saturated field, until an impulse arises to let manifestation come. This is the natural striving of the whole to express itself. Creation is born not for the sake of receiving, but for the sake of the act of manifestation itself.

The first thought to arise is inseparable from vibration. A thought in Primordium is not a word, it is pure intention. This intention does not describe, it forms. At this point there are no cause-and-effect links. Creation is not an answer to a question, but a flash of presence.

In quantum physics the state of a system before measurement is described by a wave function, a set of possibilities. Until there is an act of observation, reality has not decided what it will be. Manifestation begins not with action, but with the fact of awareness. Observation translates possibility into event. This flash is the conceiving of the point of creation — the first wave of awareness, out of which everything else is unpacked.

Every limitation you perceive today as «reality» was once accepted, once you agreed to it. Often unconsciously, yet within you there still lives a space in which you are limited by nothing. It is always available and needs no proof; it simply waits for your return to your true self. This space is Primordium within you. There you do not fight for the right to be, you already are. You do not search for your essence — you are it.

Creation begins in every instant. There is no need to attain a high state — the point of creation is already available. It is the nature of your consciousness. When you stop searching outward and turn your gaze within, creation begins: «I am. I choose.»

Who are you without everything you have been told? In Primordium there is no personality. It is pure aware presence. To become aware of yourself in this state is to return to the «I am» that precedes all particulars.

It is the sensation of consciousness, of a living source. When you come into contact with this level of yourself, everything begins to change.

The engineer and researcher Genrich Altshuller, in creating TRIZ (the theory of inventive problem solving), came to the conclusion that new ideas are not born from sorting through options, but arise from working with contradiction and the field of possibilities. At the heart of TRIZ lies a principle: before searching for a solution, one must enter the space where the solution is not yet chosen. Only by holding this state, without collapsing it prematurely into a template, can one bring forth something truly new. Altshuller described, in applied language, that same Primordium: a field of pure potentiality, out of which form arises not by effort but by the right focus of consciousness.

When you come into contact with this level of yourself, everything begins to change. Not the outer world — but the manner of your presence within it. You no longer react — you direct. You no longer defend yourself — you radiate. You no longer contract within boundaries — you remember that you are beyond all forms.

And then freedom appears. Not as a right, but as the natural state of a conscious creator.

Who are you, if you remove everything you have been told about yourself? Who do you remain if name, history, profession, body, memory all fall away? What remains of the «I» when all forms vanish? In Primordium there is neither «personality» nor «self-concept», yet this is not emptiness. It is pure aware presence, holding within it the possibility of being anyone — but the decision of exactly who has not yet been made. There, in the pre-form depth, you are undefined, yet also unlimited. To become aware of yourself in this state means returning to the primordial «I am» that precedes all particulars. This awareness needs no words. It is not a thought. It is the sensation of one's own presence — not as a person, but as consciousness. Not as a function, but as a living source capable of observing, choosing, and directing the flow of creation.

And what if no Primordium exists at all, and reality truly begins with matter, with a random impulse? Such a view seems logical because it is simple: there is a cause, there is an effect, there is a linear chain — yet it has one flaw: it does not explain the very fact of awareness. If consciousness is secondary, where does the capacity come from to ask «who am I?» and to experience a meaning that cannot be reduced to a survival function? And why, in moments of silence, of pause, of uncertainty, are the most precise decisions so often born? Perhaps Primordium is neither an object of faith nor a scientific hypothesis, but an experience that is either lived or ignored. It cannot be proven, yet it can be tested — through attention to one's own presence.
