The space of possibilities: emptiness filled with potential

Stroke 2 reveals emptiness as a space of possibilities. It shows that the absence of form is a saturation with potential, one that already holds all probabilities, while conscious attention determines which of them will manifest.

Point 4

Why is emptiness not empty?

What do you picture when you hear the word «emptiness»? Most often it is non-being, nothing, a void, the absence of form, meaning, and essence. But in truth this is only an image imposed by the mind. Emptiness in its primordial sense is not the absence of everything, but the presence of everything that has not yet found form.

We fear emptiness because it gives no foothold. The mind looks for something to grasp: a structure, an explanation, an outline. But emptiness is the place before structure. It is the space of freedom from definitions, where nothing is yet decided and therefore everything is possible.

Emptiness is not an end. It is the beginning before the beginning. It is not a boundary, but a gateway. To speak in the language of Primordium, emptiness is that very Great Nothing of which the ancients spoke. Before the appearance of form, matter, and even time, there existed a state in which everything is contained. It is not an absence, but a supersaturation with the possible. As one of the ancient texts says, «In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.»

In the language of religions, this is what the Bible calls the «Spirit moving over the waters», and the Vedas — Shunyata, the silence in which all sound is hidden. For Buddhists emptiness does not mean non-being, but points to the interdependent existence of all things. The Taoists called it the Tao — not acting, yet through it everything happens. This point outside of time is the presence of God before the word, before the light, before matter.

Physics, too, knows that an absolute vacuum does not exist. Even in so-called «empty» space, quantum fields seethe, particles spontaneously appear and vanish, born in a play of probabilities. Emptiness is a field of activity hidden from the eye. It is precisely in this emptiness that everything is conceived. Not because there is «nothing» in it, but because in it nothing is yet manifest.

In this silence a vibration arises, and the vibration becomes energy, and the energy form. Thus from the indivisible distinction is born, from stillness motion, from silence sound. This very moment — the birth out of emptiness — is the act of creation, which is repeated within each of us whenever we create something new.

At the company 3M there is a «15% time» rule, where employees are allowed to optimize nothing and to carry out no specific tasks. This space without a goal gave the world Post-it and dozens of other products. The emptiness in the schedule turned out to be not a loss of efficiency, but the condition for the appearance of the new.

In my own life, too, there are periods when a pause appears: without plans, without tasks, without a clear next step. The first reaction is usually anxiety, as though something has been missed. Yet it is precisely in this «emptiness» that, a little later, ideas appear which find it hard to be born in the mode of busyness. Emptiness is not an enemy, but an ally of the creator. It is a blank canvas on which anything at all can be written, if one does not fear the silence. You enter it not in order to find something definite, but in order to perceive what does not fit into the old conceptions. Emptiness as a blank canvas on which the new can be created. In it you remain without masks. Without roles. Without the external. And in this transparency you suddenly discover: you have not vanished, you have grown wider. There has become more of you.

Emptiness is not empty. It is pregnant with potential. And the quieter you become, the more clearly you hear how, within this silence, the first is born…

Point 5

How are all probabilities laid within it?

If emptiness is not an absence but a pure field, then what is hidden within it? The answer: everything. But this «everything» is not yet in form. These are possibilities not set in motion. States not fixed in the manifest. Choices not yet made.

Emptiness is a higher order that does not yet need to manifest. At this point the familiar laws of time and causality do not operate. There is no «later» here. Here everything exists at once, in the quantum field of possibilities. This is how the structure of reality works at the finest levels: you think you are choosing among options, when in fact your point of attention activates one of the already existing probabilities. All probabilities exist, but the one that manifests is the one toward which conscious presence is directed. Like seeds lying in the soil: you water — and one sprouts, while the rest go on existing in potential. So it is in emptiness: everything already is, but you see what you are able to tune in to.

For example, at IDEO, a company known for its innovative methodologies, ideas are never selected at once. First a «field of options» is created: dozens of prototypes, even contradicting one another, and only then does the team's attention gradually focus on one direction. It is held that a premature choice «kills» the probability of a true breakthrough. While the field stays open, radically new solutions are possible. You are used to thinking that reality is a straight road, but in fact it is closer to a tree: from every instant a multitude of branches diverge. Every thought, every feeling, every «yes» or «no» is a choice of one probability out of infinitely many possible. And you do not merely walk along one of them. You are the force that unfolds the path. You are not a pawn on the board, you move the board itself.

Modern neuroscientific research shows that the brain processes imagined and real actions through the same neural mechanisms: in the mental performance of a movement, the same zones are activated as in a physical action, though without an actual muscle contraction. For example, in musicians who mentally rehearse playing an instrument, an activation of the motor and auditory zones of the brain is recorded, and this improves the precision and coordination of performance even without sound and movement. So too people with phobias, merely by imagining the object of fear, display the same reactions as in a real encounter with it: the heartbeat quickens, perspiration increases. This means that decision and reaction are formed already at the level of thought: the brain begins to prepare the body and to shift the probabilities of behavior before the action occurs, and the physical movement only realizes a decision already made at the neural level.

Thus emptiness is not stillness, but an unseen motion in which each of your glances creates a new world. You do not search for a probability, you awaken it. You do not follow within the flow, you become its rhythm.

Point 6

The non-existent as the cradle of everything

Everything you have ever created (an idea, an action, a relationship, a choice) was born not from form, but from emptiness. Not from what already exists, but from what is not yet shaped, yet already possible.

In every act of creation there is a moment when there is as yet nothing — no plan, no structure, no guarantee of a result. There is only an inner impulse, the silence before the word, an intuition that as yet has no name. You never create out of the ready-made, you enter the space of the unmanifest and allow it gradually to take form. This is the alchemy of creation: to enter the silence before everything and to let possibility manifest through you, becoming a conduit of potential.

All reality appears not out of the dense, but out of the subtle. Matter is always secondary. The act of creation takes place within — there, where there is nothing but pure presence. It is always a borderline state: between the not-yet-existing and the already-possible, between emptiness and the beginning of vibration. You do not so much find solutions as create the conditions in which they can appear. In this sense you are not a producer, but a conduit of potential. And the quieter it is within, the purer the possibility you are able to embody.

Religious texts speak of this same thing in another language. The passage from non-being into being is described as the Divine breath: «And God said: let there be light — and there was light.» This is not a command and not a pressure, but a vibration of thought turning emptiness into reality. In the Kabbalistic tradition this moment is called Tzimtzum — when the Infinite, as it were, takes a step back to free a place for the world. Even this «contraction» is filled with love: with the wish to give manifestation a space. Creation is born not out of power, but out of yielding, out of a quiet permitting of the world to be.

Science describes the same principle. In quantum physics even the vacuum is not empty: within it particles continuously arise and vanish, creating fluctuations of energy. Physicists call this «quantum fluctuations» — a birth out of nothing. Emptiness turns out to be not an absence, but a saturated field ready to respond to the slightest impulse. So too in human consciousness: any thought is a fluctuation in the inner field, which may go unnoticed or may become the beginning of a whole world, if it is allowed to unfold.

Research shows that the mode of «mind-wandering» (the default mode) raises creativity. When the brain is not occupied with a specific task, associative areas are activated, and it is often precisely in moments of idleness that insights arrive. Psychologists even advise practicing «doing nothing»: short breaks without gadgets, to improve cognitive functions and lower the level of cortisol (the stress hormone). Thus the practices of contemplating emptiness are scientifically grounded: they foster psychological well-being and innovative thinking.

And what if there is no «field of possibilities» at all, and emptiness is truly just a pause between events, one that must be filled with deeds, decisions, and actions so as not to lose time? Seen this way, emptiness seems dangerous: in it there are no guarantees, no foothold, no familiar control. Yet it is precisely the attempt to fill it at once that most often deprives us of access to more precise decisions. Experience shows that in haste we choose not the best but the first available. Emptiness, by contrast, does not take motion away — it returns it to the source. It does not demand a halt forever, but offers a delay just long enough for the choice to become conscious. And in this sense emptiness is an entrance into a wider level of reality, where not only the familiar scenarios are possible.

Key takeaways

  1. 1

Emptiness is not an absence, but a saturation with the potential. In it nothing is defined and therefore everything is possible.

  2. 2

All probabilities already exist. You do not create them from scratch, you tune in to one of them and allow it to manifest through you.

  3. 3

A conscious choice is the moment of turning probability into reality. Reality is not given to you. It is activated by your state and your attention.

  4. 4

Creation begins from the subtle. It is not bound to external resources, it is born within — in the emptiness, where there is as yet nothing, yet you are already ready to create.

  5. 5

You do not depend on circumstances. Because your point of power is not in the dense, but in the primary: in intention, attention, and the purity of inner space.

  6. 6

Emptiness calls. It waits for those who dare to enter it not with the question «what shall I take?», but with the intention: «what can I create?»

What will shift in your perception once you realize this stroke?

  1. 1

You will begin to relate differently to pauses and uncertainty. They will cease to be perceived as a loss of time and will begin to feel like a space in which a decision can become precise.

  2. 2

It will become noticeable how attention influences choice. You will see that reality does not simply «happen», but is activated by what you keep your focus on and by the state from which you look.

  3. 3

The habit of rushing toward conclusions and decisions will weaken. An inner permission for probabilities to ripen will appear.

  4. 4

The sense of your own role will change. You will stop feeling that you are walking along a set path and will begin to unfold the direction yourself.

Questions and answers

Why is emptiness not empty?
Emptiness, in the sense of the stroke, is the presence of everything that has not yet found form. It is the place before structure, a space of freedom from definitions where nothing is decided and therefore much is possible.
How are all probabilities laid within it?
All possibilities exist at once, like seeds in the soil. The point of attention activates one of them, and it sprouts into reality, while the rest go on living in potential.
What does awareness have to do with it?
Awareness sets the field of probabilities from which the choice is drawn. A person's state and focus resonate with a particular outcome, and that outcome becomes the manifest one.
